From Monday, July 28th to Sunday, August 3rd, BLUE OCEAN DOME hosted a variety of fishing-related workshops under the theme “Discover! Experience! Gather Future Fishermen!” Many visitors, especially children, participated, and the venue was bustling every day.
Experience being a fisherman with a set net! Think about the future of the ocean!
On the first day of the event, participants enjoyed a hands-on experience focused on the work of fishermen: “set net fishing.” Yuki Tsuda of Fisherman Japan Co., Ltd. and Shinnosuke Oya of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology introduced “set net fishing” through quizzes and videos. In the second half of the event, Yosuke Nakata, a fisherman active in Noto Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, joined the group and gave children a hands-on experience of set net fishing.

Experience being a pole-and-line fisherman! Learning Japanese Food Culture through Bonito
On the second day, we focused on pole-and-line fishing for bonito, introducing different types of fishing and the ecology of bonito. Children used real fishing rods to reel in model bonitos and experience the thrill of pole-and-line fishing. The “Bonito Fishing Showdown” was a close contest, with the red team winning 20 bonitos and the blue team winning 18. Participants commented, “It was fun,” and “It was hard to catch them,” demonstrating the program’s role in conveying fishing culture through learning and experience.

Welcome! A fishmonger’s experience conveying the appeal of fish!
On the third day, Kazunori Yasunaga of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology took the stage to explain the knowledge and mechanisms necessary for selling fish. A hands-on workshop, from purchasing to selling, allowed children to experience the process of “conveying fish” and share the importance of fish-eating culture and distribution.

Why Freeze Fish? Learning Freezing Technology in a Fun Way by Galilei
On Day 4, we welcomed Yumeka Fujisawa of Fukushima Galilei Co., Ltd. to hold a workshop to learn about freezing technology, essential for delivering delicious fish to the dinner table. Through experiments and quizzes using blast chillers and shock freezers, we demonstrated how freezing technology contributes to maintaining freshness and ensuring food safety.

Aquaculture Experience Starting with Feed: Toward a Future Where Fish Can Continue to Be Served! by Skretting
On Day 5, Sadahito Tokui of Skretting Co., Ltd., a global aquaculture feed manufacturer, and Kazunori Yasunaga of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology explained the global food crisis and the essential “feed” for aquaculture. By observing sustainable feed production and feeding red sea bream in an aquarium, children learned about the nutrients necessary for fish growth and the mechanisms of sustainable aquaculture. The workshop also provided an opportunity for children to consider future food culture and environmental conservation.

Experience the Market of the Future: A Digital Fish Purchasing Experience! by Mirai Marche
On Day 6, Daisuke Iguchi and Naoki Ishigame of Mirai Marche Co., Ltd. took the stage to host a “Digital Purchasing Experience.” In the first half of the event, children played the role of supermarket buyers and conducted a workshop to purchase fish and shellfish to create their own original fish section. Participants also experienced purchasing fish from the market using the Mirai Marche app, giving them a taste of the future of seafood distribution.

Fishing for Fish! IT Fisherman Expedition by Lighthouse
On the final day, the “IT Fisherman Expedition” took place, where participants used digital devices to search for schools of fish. Sakae Kusanishi of Lighthouse Co., Ltd. gave a quiz-style explanation of how fishermen find schools of fish, highlighting the potential for linking IT and the fishing industry.
