The private pavilion “BLUE OCEAN DOME” (ZERI JAPAN) at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, which aims to “revitalize the ocean,” will be relocated to the maritime nation of the Maldives after the Expo ends.

The nonprofit organization ZERI JAPAN (“ZERI JAPAN”) has decided to relocate the building of the private pavilion “BLUE OCEAN DOME” to be exhibited at the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, to the Republic of the Maldives after the expo.

ZERI JAPAN is a specified non-profit corporation established in 2001 to promote environmental awareness and practice, build industrial clusters, and realize a recycling-oriented society. The zero-emission concept (ZERI : Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives) was the starting point for the establishment of a recycling-oriented society. At the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, we will exhibit a pavilion that focuses on the sustainable use of marine resources and the conservation of marine ecosystems in order to realize the “Osaka Blue Ocean Vision,” which was announced at G20 Osaka Summit in 2019 and aims to eliminate additional contamination by marine plastic waste by 2050.

BLUE OCEAN DOME was designed by world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban, and uses paper tubes, bamboo-cladding materials, and carbon-plastic building materials that embody ZERI JAPAN’s sustainability philosophy to realize a new architectural innovation that is “strong and light”. In today’s society, where the promotion of the circular economy and ESG is increasingly required, this innovation will provide a direction for future architectural design. The design concept, which assumes continued use not only during the Expo but also after the Expo, is in line with the principles of the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, which aims to realize sustainable management through the efficient use of resources. The relocation site in the Republic of the Maldives is planned to be used in a marine resort development project for which Mr. Shigeru Ban is in charge of architectural design, and details are currently being coordinated with relevant authorities and parties. At the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, it is a great pleasure for ZERI JAPAN that BLUE OCEAN DOME will be reused in the Republic of the Maldives, an island nation, after the Expo, which will promote the sustainable use of marine resources and the conservation of marine ecosystems to the world and stimulate action change in the international community and people. ZERI JAPAN hope that it will become a legacy of the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai as a blue innovation from Japan, a maritime nation, to the world.
